Remove metadata from a ChatGPT or DALL-E image

When you download an image from ChatGPT, the file OpenAI hands you often includes a C2PA content credential. A screenshot, a copy from the preview, or a pass through a messenger usually does not. Clean the download, not a photo of the screen.

JPG, PNG, and WebP are rewritten at the container level, so the pixels stay as they were. AVIF and HEIC are edited in place when the file structure allows it.

The credential is on the download

OpenAI has shipped C2PA content credentials on images downloaded from ChatGPT and from DALL-E 3. That credential is a metadata container, commonly a JUMBF box in a JPEG APP11 segment or a PNG caBX chunk, not a visible badge. Platforms that look for C2PA can read it on upload and attach their own AI label.

The preview inside the chat is not that file. If you screenshot the conversation, or if an app recompresses the image while you share it, the credential is often already gone before you ever open this page. DALL-E 2 exports were less consistent than later ChatGPT downloads. The only reliable check is the file in front of you.

The C2PA remover explains the container. This page is the practical path for a ChatGPT export: confirm the credential, strip it, upload the stripped copy. SynthID is a Google pixel watermark and is not what OpenAI writes. A pixel watermark, if some other tool added one later, would remain.

How to strip a ChatGPT image

  1. 1

    Use the download button

Save the image from the chat’s download or save action. Do not photograph the monitor and do not paste the preview into a doc first.

  2. 2

    Confirm C2PA

The checker reports a content credential when a JUMBF, caBX, or matching HEIF box is present. It does not validate the signature.

  3. 3

    Clean on this device

The tool above removes C2PA along with XMP, EXIF, GPS, IPTC, and PNG text. JPG and PNG pixels stay as they were.

  4. 4

    Post the new file

Attach the download from this page. The original in your Downloads folder still has the credential.

A cleaned file is not a disclosure decision

Taking the credential off a file you own does not decide whether you must say the image was generated. Platform rules and laws such as the EU AI Act can still require that. Read the disclaimer.

Questions

Do ChatGPT images always have C2PA?

Downloads often do. Screenshots and recompressed shares often do not. Older DALL-E exports varied. Check the file.

Does this remove the picture’s look?

No. For JPG, PNG, and WebP the compressed image data is copied, not re-encoded.

Why does the checker stay empty?

This copy never had a credential, or something already stripped it. Empty metadata does not prove the picture is a photograph.

Can I clean a whole chat of images?

Yes, up to 30 files, 15 MB each, then download a ZIP. Each file is still processed locally.
