C2PA remover for photos

C2PA is a content-credential standard. In an image file it is stored as metadata: a JUMBF box in a JPEG APP11 segment, a caBX chunk in a PNG, or a uuid box in a HEIF file such as AVIF or HEIC. This page deletes that container. It does not forge a new credential, and it does not touch SynthID.

Clean on this device

JPG, PNG, and WebP are rewritten at the container level, so the pixels stay as they were. AVIF and HEIC are edited in place when the file structure allows it.

Where the manifest actually sits

A C2PA manifest is not a visible watermark and not a platform’s badge. The badge is what Instagram or Adobe’s panel shows after software reads the manifest. The manifest itself is a box of bytes. In JPEG it rides in APP11 segments marked as JUMBF. In PNG it is commonly a caBX chunk. In AVIF and HEIC it is a uuid box whose identifier is the C2PA one, or a related item. Strip those and a reader that only looks for the container finds nothing.

Adobe’s Content Credentials are C2PA. That is why Firefly and Photoshop Generative Fill show up here. OpenAI has used the same standard on ChatGPT downloads. A file can also carry XMP that mentions a digital source type without a full manifest, or a manifest without much XMP. The remover deletes both.

The checker does not validate the signature and does not draw the assertion tree. It tells you the container is present. After a clean, a second drop should not report C2PA. If it does, the file was not the download you just made.

Remove a C2PA manifest

  1. 1

    Start from the signed download

Screenshots do not contain the manifest. The signed JPEG or PNG does.

  2. 2

    Confirm the container

Use the checker. The C2PA line means JUMBF, caBX, or a matching HEIF box.

  3. 3

    Strip on this device

APP11 segments, caBX chunks, and C2PA uuid boxes are dropped. Image data for JPG, PNG, and WebP is copied. EXIF and GPS go in the same pass.

  4. 4

Keep a signed master if provenance matters

Some clients want the credential. Clean the publishing copy, not the only copy. Read the disclaimer before you treat this as a compliance step. It is not one.

What C2PA removal cannot do

It cannot remove SynthID or any other pixel watermark. It cannot change a label already stored on a platform. It cannot prove a file is a photograph. An absent manifest only means the manifest is absent.

Questions

Is a C2PA remover the same as a Content Credentials remover?

For image files, yes. Content Credentials are Adobe’s C2PA manifests.

Do you break the JPEG?

No. The scan data after the SOS marker is copied through. Metadata segments before the image, including APP11, are what get dropped.

Can the tool add a fake camera credential?

No. It only deletes metadata. It does not write a new EXIF block or a new signature.

What about C2PA inside an MP4?

Out of scope. This remover is for still images.
