Remove AI metadata from an image you post on Threads

Threads does not invent a new metadata format. An image you attach is still a JPEG or PNG, and Meta can read the same C2PA and related records it reads on Instagram. Clean the attachment on this device. A text-only post has no image metadata to remove.

Clean on this device

JPG, PNG, and WebP are rewritten at the container level, so the pixels stay as they were. AVIF and HEIC are edited in place when the file structure allows it.

Same company, same file-level trigger

A Threads post with a photo is an upload to Meta. The AI info style of label, when it is driven by the file, comes from records such as a C2PA credential or AI-related XMP. That is the same mechanism described on the Instagram and Facebook pages. Classifiers and pixel watermarks are the part this tool does not change.

People cross-post the same export to Threads, Instagram, and X. Clean once, then send that copy to each app. Cleaning three different originals is how the credential survives on one of them. If the image was generated with Meta AI inside another Meta app, download a real file before you expect this page to help. The in-app composer does not hand you bytes to edit.

A text post, a link preview you do not control, or a repost of someone else’s attachment is not your file. You cannot strip metadata from a preview card that Threads generated on its servers.

Attach a cleaned image

  1. 1

Start from the file, not the repost

Save the JPG or PNG you have the right to edit.

  2. 2

    Read and strip

Checker first if you are unsure, then the tool on this page. GPS goes with the rest of EXIF.

  3. 3

    Attach the download

In Threads, pick the cleaned file from your library.

  4. 4

    Ignore the old post

A post already on your profile keeps whatever Meta stored. Delete it if the public copy should change.

Reposts do not re-run your cleaner

Someone else reposting your old thread does not upload your new file. The cleaned copy only matters on posts you create with it.

Questions

Does Threads have its own AI metadata?

No separate format you need a different tool for. It is a Meta upload of an image file. C2PA and related metadata are the file-level signals.

Will this clean a text post?

There is nothing to clean if you did not attach an image.

Can I clean a link preview?

No. The preview image is fetched by Threads. Clean a file you attach yourself.

Does the photo quality drop?

JPG, PNG, and WebP pixels are not recompressed.
