Remove AI metadata from a photo

“Remove AI metadata from a photo” means the records that say how the file was generated or edited: a C2PA content credential, an XMP digital source type, a PNG chunk that stores a prompt. It does not mean scrubbing the pixels. This page strips those records locally, and it strips ordinary EXIF and GPS in the same pass.

Clean on this device

JPG, PNG, and WebP are rewritten at the container level, so the pixels stay as they were. AVIF and HEIC are edited in place when the file structure allows it.

Which records count as AI metadata

C2PA is the one platforms increasingly look for. It is a signed manifest in a JUMBF container: JPEG APP11, PNG caBX, or a uuid box in a HEIF file. Adobe calls the same idea Content Credentials. OpenAI has shipped it on ChatGPT downloads. The C2PA page is the narrow version of this job.

XMP is older and looser. Creator tool, a digital source type such as trained algorithmic media, and a prompt copied into a description are all XMP or PNG text. Stable Diffusion interfaces write a parameters chunk. Midjourney downloads have often stored the prompt this way. None of that is a pixel watermark.

EXIF software tags sometimes name an AI app, and sometimes they only name a phone. This remover does not try to delete “just the AI lines.” The whole EXIF block goes, GPS included. That is why a privacy-minded export and an AI-minded export are the same download. Details of the full set are on remove metadata.

Remove AI metadata from a photo

  1. 1

    Download the generator’s file

A screenshot of ChatGPT, Gemini, or Midjourney is usually a different image with the metadata already lost and the pixels re-encoded.

  2. 2

    See the AI records

The checker separates C2PA, XMP hints, and PNG text from ordinary camera EXIF.

  3. 3

    Strip them here

JPG, PNG, and WebP pixels stay. The report lists what was removed.

  4. 4

    Upload only the new file

The original still has the credential. Instagram, Facebook, and the other platform guides describe what happens at upload.

Pixel watermarks are not AI metadata

SynthID, and any similar mark woven into pixel values, survives this tool because the pixels are not rewritten. An empty metadata report does not mean those marks are gone, and it does not mean a platform will skip its label.

Questions

What is AI metadata in a photo?

File records about generation or AI editing: C2PA, certain XMP fields, and PNG text such as a prompt. It is not the pixels and not SynthID.

Will this stop every AI label?

It removes the usual file-level trigger. Classifiers, pixel watermarks, and posts that are already live can still show a label.

Does the photo get uploaded?

No. Cleaning runs in your browser.

Can I remove AI metadata and keep camera EXIF?

No. One pass removes both. Keep a master with the camera record.
